Fighting between ethnic-minority militants and troops of Myanmar's military is intensifying in the northeastern part of the country. A coordinated counter-offensive was announced Friday by members of a group calling itself the "Three Brotherhood Alliance." The attack is aimed at toppling the junta. It was launched in response to airstrikes and shelling by Myanmar's military. The alliance says it has killed more than 100 enemy troops and taken control of 80 military facilities in Shan state. Myanmar's military has been conducting indiscriminate air strikes on citizens. In early October, an artillery barrage hit a displaced persons camp in the northern state of Kachin, killing at least 29, including 11 children. A military spokesperson denied its involvement. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, is reporting that the latest round of fighting had displaced more than 6,200 people as of Monday. It adds that several hundred people have reportedly crossed the border into China in search of safety. The UN is warning that the number is expected to rise, stretching an already under-funded humanitarian response.
