S.Korea stresses significance of summit with US NHK

South Korea's presidential office has stressed the significance of a summit on Monday between the country's leader and US President Donald Trump, saying the meeting will lead to the strengthening of bilateral relations with Japan and trilateral cooperation with Japan and the US.



South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Trump met at the White House.



The two leaders confirmed they will boost economic cooperation, including promoting South Korean investment in the shipbuilding sector, in connection with a trade agreement reached between the two countries.



South Korean National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac told reporters in Washington that discussions were conducted in a friendly atmosphere and in an open and candid manner.



He said Trump highly praised Lee's decision to visit Japan before the US as a way to help achieve a major improvement in South Korea-Japan relations and strengthen cooperation among South Korea, Japan and the US.

Wi said the US position was one of welcoming a good relationship between Seoul and Tokyo, as it is a core element in achieving regional peace and stability.



Wi also said Trump indicated his intention to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit to be held this autumn in South Korea.
