A Chinese court has handed down a death sentence for a man charged over a knife attack on a bus carrying Japanese schoolchildren in eastern China. The Chinese man in his 50s was detained in June last year at the location where he attacked the school bus in the city of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. A Chinese female bus attendant was killed, and a Japanese woman and her child were injured. The death sentence was handed down at a local court on Thursday, but Japanese media outlets, including NHK, were not allowed to be present during the court hearing. The Japanese Consul-General in Shanghai, Okada Masaru, observed the proceeding. The Japanese Foreign Ministry says the man had been charged with murder. The court reportedly said his crime was extremely heinous and posed a serious threat to society. As to his motive, the man reportedly explained that he got sick of living because of his debts. The ministry said the trial lasted 10 minutes and there was no reference with regard to Japan. On Friday, another trial related to an attack on a Japanese school boy will open in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. The boy was stabbed to death by a man in September last year. The series of incidents involving Japanese citizens has triggered Japanese schools across China to boost their security measures. But concerns about safety still remain.
