The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued tsunami advisories for the Izu Islands, Ogasawara Islands and the prefectures of Chiba, Kochi, Miyazaki and Kagoshima following a quake on Monday morning. A tsunami up to 60 centimeters was observed in Yaene on Hachijojima Island at 7:17 a.m. Officials are warning that tsunami could hit the areas repeatedly and rise up suddenly. They are calling on people in these areas to stay away from shores and river mouths. The agency says a quake struck off the coast of Torishima Island, which is part of the Izu chain, at 5:25 a.m. But tremors registering an intensity of 1 or higher on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to 7 have not been observed. Agency officials said the quake's magnitude remains unknown. In a media conference on Monday morning, an agency official called on people not to go into the water or get close to shores until tsunami advisories are lifted as sea currents will remain rapid. He said although tremors have been observed, the agency has yet to confirm whether they have been caused by volcanic eruptions or an occurrence on the ocean floor.
