US shocked at Colorado nightclub shooting NHK

People are still in shock over Saturday's mass shooting in the US state of Colorado at a nightclub that is popular with the LGBTQ community.

A 22-year-old gunman opened fire at the club in Colorado Springs, killing at least five people and wounding 18 others.

On Sunday, a ceremony was held to mourn the victims at a church nearby. A rainbow-colored flag was placed in a show of solidarity with sexual minorities.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis posted an emoji of a broken heart on social media. He released a statement that read, "This is horrific, sickening, and devastating." He said Colorado stands with its LGTBQ community. Polis is openly gay.

President Joe Biden also released a statement saying, "We cannot and must not tolerate hate."

US media say the attack is reminiscent of a shooting that left 49 people dead at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in 2016.
