Ukraine reportedly launches main part of counteroffensive NHK

US officials reportedly say Ukraine has launched the main part of its counteroffensive against Russia.

A report in the New York Times on Wednesday quotes them as saying Ukraine has deployed thousands of troops to the Zaporizhzhia region in the south.

Many have reportedly received training and equipment from Western nations.

The report says Ukraine's leaders aim to drive a wedge into the Russian-held territory leading to Crimea, which Moscow unilaterally annexed in 2014.

Russia's defense ministry said on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces had resumed an intensive assault near Orikhiv in Zaporizhzhia.

The announcement added that all attacks had been repelled.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that hostilities had intensified in southern Ukraine.
