The Hong Kong government has added new provisions to the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, which require it to fully cooperate with China's national security office in investigation activities. The Office for Safeguarding National Security was set up in Hong Kong by the Chinese government. Officials are tasked with overseeing and guiding the Hong Kong government based on the 2020 national security law for the territory. The law is said to allow the security office to directly investigate "complex" cases involving interference by external forces, and send them to be tried in mainland China. The Hong Kong government said on Tuesday that the new provisions stipulate it is required to provide the security office with all necessary assistance in a timely manner. With more authority given to the office, Beijing could tighten its grip over Hong Kong.
