Rescue crews in Turkey and Syria are refusing to give up five days after earthquakes devastated towns and cities along the border. More than 23,000 people are confirmed to have died, and millions are in dire need of help. The 72-hour window is said to be crucial to rescue anyone trapped under the rubble. But even days later, victims are being found alive. Crews know they are running out of time to find others and to give them the care they need. One survivor in the Turkish province of Hatay said, "God forbid anyone goes through this sorrow, this pain. We have thousands, tens of thousands, dead." Doctors and nurses are struggling to keep up. They are working in facilities without electricity and running water. And they are running out of medicine. Survivors from the Turkish city of Kahramanmaras are being flown to the capital, Ankara, for treatment. They include families, small children and infants. Thousands who remain in the city have lost everything. They have been moved to a makeshift camp set up by the government and international organizations. Aid workers and relief supplies have also begun arriving from abroad. However, staff are struggling to help those in need as they, and the survivors, deal with below-freezing temperatures.
