The New York Stock Exchange ended 2022 with its key index 8.7 percent lower than last year's close. That's the largest decline since 2008, the year of the global financial crisis. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended Friday at 33,147, down 73 points from Thursday's close. This was the first year-on-year decline for the index in four years, coming against a backdrop of record-level inflation and a surge in interest rates. The tech-heavy Nasdaq index fell 33.1 percent from 2021's close. Investors sold stocks on expectations that the Federal Reserve may continue to raise interest rates in 2023.
