Trump's departure sinks Albanese's chance to press for AUKUS NHK

A: Hey buddy, did you catch the news about Trump and Aussie Prime Minister meeting?
B: Nah, what's up?

A: Well, turns out Trump left the G7 summit early, so their scheduled sit-down didn't happen. Bummer!

B: Oh, that's too bad. What was he supposed to talk about?

A: Albanese wanted to convince Trump about the importance of this thing called AUKUS, a security pact between Australia, the UK, and the US.

B: And why would that be important for Trump?

A: Well, because it's supposed to keep China in check in the Pacific, which I guess serves American interests too.

B: Right, gotcha. But what's the deal with this pact now? Is it still a go?

A: As far as we know, yes! Even though the Pentagon is looking it over to make sure it fits Trump's 'America First' agenda. The plan is for Australia to get at least three American submarines.

B: Oh, I see. So, what happened after that?

A: Starmer from the UK said the sub deal is good to go after meeting with Trump, and Albanese was all 'That's awesome!' because of course he wants this deal to work out!

B: Makes sense. Sounds like Australia really needs this security boost, especially for those nuclear-powered subs to balance out China in the Pacific.

A scheduled meeting between Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was abandoned when the US president left the G7 summit in Canada early.

The two leaders have yet to meet face to face.

Albanese had hoped to sell Trump on the importance of the AUKUS security pact between Australia, the UK and the US.

A day earlier, Albanese had stressed that American interests would be served by the security framework, which is intended to deter China in the Pacific.

The Pentagon is reviewing the pact to ensure it aligns with Trump's America first agenda. Under the pact, Australia will acquire at least three Virginia-class attack submarines from the United States.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told reporters the submarine deal was going ahead following his meeting with Trump at the summit on Monday. Albanese welcomed Starmer's remarks as "positive."

Australia is pinning its hopes on AUKUS to upgrade its defense capabilities. The nuclear-powered submarines in particular are needed to counter China's growing presence in the Pacific.
Summary
Scheduled meeting between Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese cancelled as Trump left G7 summit early. Discussion aimed at convincing Trump about AUKUS, a security pact to counter China in the Pacific. The Pentagon is assessing alignment with Trump's 'America First' policy.
