Leaders of developing countries at a UN climate conference have drawn attention to severe damage from extreme weather events caused by climate change.

Those were among the concerns highlighted by delegates of more than 100 countries and territories at a two-day summit in Egypt. The event was held through Tuesday as part of the COP27 meeting.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said the catastrophic floods that hit the country this year covered the size of three European countries and impacted 33 million people.

He said Pakistan has to "spend billions of dollars to protect flood-affected people from further miseries and difficulties."

Leaders from other developing nations said they are affected by droughts and loss of land due to rising sea levels.

One of the key agenda items at COP27 is how to provide financial aid to cover losses and damage brought by climate change.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to provide about 170 million dollars to "support those countries hit hardest by climate change in a targeted way in dealing with loss and damage."

Belgium and some other nations expressed willingness to provide financial help, and are welcomed by developing economies.

At the same time, there are calls from poor countries for a new fund specializing in dealing with loss and damage.
