The Israeli military announced the release of 16 more people who were held hostage by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Mediators are pushing for an extension of the truce, to allow humanitarian aid into the enclave and even more hostages to be released. Hamas had already freed more than 80 people during the first five days of the pause, while Israeli officials released 180 Palestinian prisoners. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his country will resume military operations in the Gaza Strip as soon as the truce period ends. The US Government is among those calling for an extension of the pause. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Tel Aviv. He will meet with key Israeli government officials to discuss the release of more hostages and humanitarian aid for Gaza. In a statement released Wednesday, a senior member of Hamas demanded the release of elderly Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. The UN agency engaged in humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip is also calling for a longer truce amid concerns the resumption in fighting will worsen the humanitarian crisis. The Director of UNRWA Affairs in Gaza, Thomas White, said, "We are very concerned there will be another outbreak of large scale fighting." The focus is on negotiations to maintain the truce period beyond Wednesday.
