Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have broken into the Congress building in the capital, Brasilia. The AFP news agency and other media report that the invasion took place on Sunday, and police used tear gas to repel protesters. Reuters says Bolsonaro supporters also stormed the Supreme Court and are surrounding the presidential palace. The Associated Press reports that it is not clear whether they broke into those buildings. Leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office as president on January 1. But Bolsonaro supporters have been continuing protests around federal buildings. Bolsonaro asked the electoral authority to annul ballots cast on some electronic machines in the presidential runoff. Analysts say the authority is unlikely to accept his request. They have expressed concern that his move may fuel turmoil as his supporters continuously refuse to accept his defeat.
