Ukraine security chief: operations in its territory are completely legal NHK

The head of Ukraine's Security Service has implied the agency's involvement in a drone attack against a Russian tanker in the Black Sea.

Russian transport authorities confirmed on social media on Saturday that a Russian tanker was attacked by sea drones in waters off the eastern Crimean Peninsula, and that the ship's engine room was damaged.

Ukrainian and Western media outlets quote sources related to Ukraine's Security Service who say the attack was carried out jointly by the Security Service and the military. They say the tanker was carrying fuel for the Russian military.

Reuters news agency has released a video it obtained from intelligence sources in Ukraine. The video shows a sea drone rushing toward a tanker.

On Saturday, the Security Service chief Vasyl Maliuk called the attack "an absolutely logical and efficient step towards the enemy." He added that such special operations conducted in the territorial waters of Ukraine are completely legal.

He stressed that Russia must leave Ukraine if it wants the attacks to end.

Russia's foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on Saturday. She noted that Ukraine's Security Service has effectively claimed responsibility for the drone attack.

She said that such actions cannot go unanswered, and their perpetrators will inevitably be punished.
