NHK has learned that the Japanese government is planning to allocate 90 percent of the budget for developing new Shinkansen lines to a project in the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido. Bullet train lines are also being built in the Hokuriku and Kyushu regions. The amount to be spent on the three projects in fiscal 2024 beginning in April comes to about 1.6 billion dollars. The total cost will be covered by the central government, local authorities and Japan Railway companies. About 1.4 billion dollars will be spent on a section in Hokkaido between Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Sapporo. Roughly 105 million dollars will be used for a section on the Hokuriku Shinkansen in central Japan that will open in March. About 45 million dollars will be allocated to the Kyushu Shinkansen line.
