Japan is set to shoulder over 6.9 percent of the total financial contributions by member countries to support the United Nations from 2025 to 2027. It remains the third largest contributor following the United States and China, with the latter's share rising to almost on par with the US. Every three years the UN reviews each member country's contributions by assessing its economy and capacity to pay. In the resolution adopted at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, the top three contributors for the period remain unchanged from the previous review. Japan's share shrank by 1.1 percentage point from the last review to 6.93 percent. The US's share is unchanged at 22 percent. By contrast, China's share rose by nearly 5 points to 20.004 percent. This is expected to boost the country's clout at the UN. The review had traditionally been approved without a vote, but this time voting was held after Russia opposed the practice. Russia and four other countries opposed the share of contributions and two others abstained -- reflecting the divide in the international community.
