Social media giant Meta says it will reinstate Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts. The former US president was suspended from the platforms after the deadly Capitol Hill riot in January 2021. Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg announced on Wednesday that the two-year ban on Trump's accounts will be lifted in the coming weeks, saying the risk to public safety has receded. Clegg noted that "the public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying -- the good, the bad and the ugly." But he warned that the former president will "face heightened penalties for repeat offenses." Twitter also lifted Trump's account suspension following the Capitol Hill riot after the company was acquired by Elon Musk.
