Japanese government sources say arrangements are underway for Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to participate in a summit next month with US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. The meeting will reportedly be held at the Camp David presidential retreat near Washington. Kishida will likely visit the US for three days from August 18. Japanese, US and South Korean officials are working to finalize the schedule. Although Kishida, Biden and Yoon have held trilateral talks on the sidelines of international conferences, this will be their first stand-alone summit. The leaders are expected to discuss how to respond to North Korea's repeated launches of ballistic missiles. It's anticipated they will strengthen security cooperation, including early activation of a data-sharing mechanism to exchange real-time missile warning data among the countries' defense authorities. They are also expected to discuss economic security as well as Washington's "extended deterrence," which refers to its commitment to defend its allies with nuclear weapons and other capabilities. Japan-US and Japan-South Korea summits are also expected.
