Israel, Hamas fail to agree on ceasefire deal NHK

Israel and Hamas failed to reach agreement on a ceasefire in the most recent negotiations over the Gaza conflict.

The talks were held in Egypt on Sunday. Reuters news agency reported neither Israel nor Hamas agreed to compromises presented by mediators and the United States.

Both sides are at odds as Israel says it will continue stationing its troops in the border region with Egypt and elsewhere in the Gaza Strip after a ceasefire is agreed on.

A senior Hamas official said on Sunday that the group will not accept the new conditions Israel proposes. Hamas demands that Israel completely withdraw its military from the enclave.

US White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the US and others were "feverishly working" to get to a ceasefire and hostage deal.

Meanwhile, Palestinian media reported that the Israeli military bombarded on Monday a school in Nuseirat, central Gaza, killing two women. They said the school sheltered many residents.

The Lebanon-based Shia Muslim group Hezbollah conducted a large-scale attack on northern Israel on Sunday.

The Israeli military said air-raid sirens sounded in the northern part of the country on Monday morning, and that it "successfully intercepted a suspicious aerial target".

Hezbollah says it has completed its retaliation following the killing of a senior commander in July, but adds that it will continue attacks against Israel as long as the Gaza conflict continues.
