Truck and bus maker Hino Motors has reached a settlement in a legal case brought by US authorities over a data falsification scandal. The Japanese firm says it will pay about 1.2 billion dollars in penalties. Hino revealed in 2022 it had been lying about emission and fuel economy figures. US authorities responded by charging the company with fraud. The automaker says it will pay more than 520 million dollars in criminal penalties. It will also pay nearly 680 million dollars for a civil resolution to the Environmental Protection Agency and the state of California, among other parties. Hino booked an extraordinary loss of 1.5 billion dollars to cover the settlement in its April-to-September earnings report. The firm expects a net loss of 1.4 billion dollars for fiscal 2024 which ends in March. Hino had to push back a planned merger with Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus while the case was being resolved. Talks over the deal are now expected to resume.
