Russian President Vladimir Putin was sworn in for a new six-year term on Tuesday. This is his fifth term as president.

During the inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin, Putin took the oath of office with his hand on the Constitution.

Russian government officials and representatives from Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine attended the ceremony.

Reuters news agency has reported that most Western countries boycotted the event. This indicates that relations are still tense between Moscow and the West, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Putin is 71 years old. He has held power, as the president or prime minister, for more than 20 years, since he assumed the presidency for the first time in 2000.

Putin is expected to prioritize the country's ongoing invasion of Ukraine and his opposition to Western countries, while stabilizing and boosting control over his political base at home.

Before the ceremony started, Russia's state-run TV station broadcast live footage of Putin walking out of his office, getting into a car and being driven to the ceremony hall.

Observers say the dramatic footage may have been broadcast to impress people and show that Putin is powerful.
