Japan's Crown Prince and Crown Princess Akishino have visited an archeological site in central Vietnam. It was the last stop on the six-day official trip they made to the Southeast Asian country to mark 50 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations. The couple visited My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on Sunday. They asked questions to a guide and took photographs. They are returning to Japan on Monday. The site was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom, which thrived from the second to 15th centuries in what is now central and southern Vietnam. The kingdom wielded significant influence on maritime trade in Asia. The site has tower temples built in fired brick with stone pillars. Seventy-one standing monuments are decorated with sandstone reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. Japan supported the construction of a museum for the preservation and research of artifacts unearthed at the site.
