Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he has spoken with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about US President Donald Trump's proposal for the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu and Rubio met in Jerusalem on Sunday. Netanyahu said the two had "very productive" discussions about a number of issues. He noted that they talked about "President Trump's bold vision" for Gaza's future. He added they discussed ways of ensuring that the vision can become "a reality." Trump said earlier this month that the US will take over Gaza and reconstruct the territory. He suggested that residents in the enclave will be relocated elsewhere. Rubio addressed Trump's proposal. He said, "It may have shocked and surprised many, but what cannot continue is the same cycle where we repeat over and over again and wind up in the exact same place." A six-week ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas has been holding in the territory, since it took effect on January 19. Hamas has released 19 of the 33 hostages that it agreed to set free under the deal. Israel has freed more than 1,100 Palestinians in return. However, there has been little progress made in the negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire agreement. The second phase apparently calls for a permanent end to the fighting. It also allegedly calls for Hamas to release all the hostages who were not freed during the first phase.
