Japan's Economic Revitalization Minister Akazawa Ryosei is preparing for talks with US officials to negotiate the review of tariff measures announced by the administration of President Donald Trump.
Akazawa plans a three-day visit to Washington from Wednesday for his first talks with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Akazawa co-heads a tariff taskforce newly launched on Friday by the Japanese government, along with Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa.
Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru expressed his intention to establish an all-Japan approach across ministries and agencies for negotiations with the US, and to take necessary measures for domestic industries.
In the first round of negotiations, Akazawa plans to explain how Japan contributes to the US economy and employment through a large sum of investments, hoping to set the stage for constructive talks.
He is expected to carefully determine negotiable fields, while calling for a review of the tariff measures. The fields under consideration may include further opening the market for agricultural products and deregulation on industrial products, which the US has been requiring.
Ahead of the talks, Akazawa has met with past negotiators in economic diplomacy to learn from their experiences.
One of them is former Secretary-General Motegi Toshimitsu of the Liberal Democratic Party, who negotiated a trade deal with the US during the first Trump administration.
