Cherry blossom tree falls on tourist in Kyoto NHK

A cherry blossom tree collapsed near a popular tourist spot in Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto on Tuesday, trapping a visitor underneath.

The incident happened at Sanneizaka, a stone-paved pedestrian road near Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which draws crowds of domestic and foreign sightseers.

Passersby notified the police shortly before noon on Tuesday that a man was pinned under a fallen cherry blossom tree.

The 62-year-old man from Mie Prefecture was rescued shortly afterward. He was reportedly conscious when he was taken to a hospital.

Preparations are underway to remove the 9-meter-tall tree, measuring 1.7 meters around the trunk, which is blocking the road.

An employee at a nearby eatery said that after hearing screams and a huge sound, he went outside and saw the fallen tree.

He said it's scary because roads in the area are narrow, so it is difficult to escape.
