Violence between Israel and Palestine sparks concerns in Asia NHK

The escalating violence between the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel's military is sparking concern in Asia.

The Thai Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that it has confirmed the death of two of its nationals in Israel. But it said reports suggest a total of 18 Thais have been killed.

It added that 9 others were reportedly injured and 11 taken hostage in Gaza.

Thailand is a major source of foreign workers in Israel with about 30,000 employed in agriculture and other industries.

The Thai Air Force is now on standby to help evacuate the more than 3,000 Thai nationals reportedly waiting to leave Israel.

In Indonesia, some 100 members of a local political party took to the streets in Jakarta on Tuesday. They called on both sides to stop the violence.

They also urged the government and President Joko Widodo to play an active role in ending the conflict.

A participant said that many Indonesians are showing solidarity with the Palestinians, as a majority of the population is Muslim.

About 80 percent of Indonesia's population is Muslim, and the government has sympathized with the Palestinian cause.

It says the root of the conflict is the occupation of the Palestinian territories by Israel, which must be resolved according to parameters agreed upon by the UN.
