Japan's Diet has enacted a law that aims to provide relief to the victims of the religious group previously known as the Unification Church. The group has been accused of soliciting significant donations from its followers. The government has requested a court to issue an order to dissolve the group. The Upper House passed the bill on Wednesday, with majority support. The law expands the scope of the Japan Legal Support Center's operations to allow alleged victims to receive support for their civil lawsuits, regardless of their income or other conditions. It is also designed to permit the government to monitor when necessary the assets of religious corporations it asks to dissolve. The new law mandates such corporations to report their estate holdings before they are liquidated and requires them to submit lists of their properties every three months. Parties were at odds during the Diet debate over how to preserve the assets of such corporations to provide relief to victims. The lawmakers agreed to put an additional clause in the law stating that discussions on how to preserve assets will take place in about three years.
