The Japanese foreign minister has told the Palestinian prime minister that Japan will resume its financial contributions to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees.

Kamikawa Yoko held telephone talks with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa on Tuesday. The prime minister has been leading a new cabinet formed on Sunday.

The Japanese government suspended funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, in January following allegations that some UNRWA staff members were involved in the Hamas attack on Israel last October.

But Kamikawa announced on Tuesday that Tokyo will lift the suspension, citing that the agency has improved its governance.

During the talks, Kamikawa explained Japan's intention to provide medical services to Palestinians in the neighboring countries and areas.

She said the country also plans to offer relief supplies for women and infants in the Gaza Strip, where sanitary conditions are deteriorating.

Mustafa expressed his gratitude for Japan's decision to restart the funding. He noted that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is grave.

Kamikawa and Mustafa agreed to work together toward a de-escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Kamikawa told him that Japan will continue to contribute to realizing a "two-state solution" in which Israel coexists with a future Palestinian state.
