Netanyahu justifies Israel's ground invasion of Gaza to US media NHK

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has offered his justifications to US media for the Israeli military's ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu was speaking to CNN and NBC News on Sunday as large-scale demonstrations against the invasion erupted in the United States.

During an interview with CNN, the prime minister was asked why he refuses to take responsibility for his failure to prevent last month's Hamas attack on Israel.

Netanyahu replied that, "this whole question will be addressed after the war." Then he asked if people asked that question to Franklin Roosevelt after Pearl Harbor in 1941 or George W. Bush after the surprise attack of September 11, 2001.

In a separate interview with NBC, Netanyahu was asked if there is a potential deal on the release of hostages held in Gaza. He said," there could be," and that "it's a result of pressure, military pressure."

The interviewer also referred to reports that a loss of power has caused the death of patients and some infants at al-Shifa hospital, the largest hospital in Gaza.

Netanyahu said Israel offered to give enough fuel to operate the hospital, incubators and other equipment. But he said Hamas refused it.
