The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 tremor that hit central Myanmar on Friday has topped 3,000. Against this backdrop, state-run TV reported that the ruling military has announced a temporary ceasefire against pro-democracy forces and ethnic minority groups from Wednesday until April 22. The military maintains it aims to speed up relief and reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of the deadly jolt. The National Unity Government, Myanmar's pro-democracy camp, said in a statement on Saturday that it will stop fighting for two weeks. The military said that the death toll from the jolt has reached 3,003 and 4,515 people were injured. It said 351 others remain unaccounted for. Myanmar's military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, is set to travel to Bangkok on Thursday for regional leaders meetings, where he is expected to appeal for support. It is quite unusual for Min Aung Hlaing to attend an international gathering. The junta has been subject to Western sanctions following the 2021 coup. Attention is focused on whether assistance to quake victims will be forthcoming because Myanmar is becoming increasingly isolated in the international community.
