Ukraine hints at boycotting Paris Olympics if Russia, Belarus athletes allowed NHK

A Ukrainian Cabinet minister has hinted that his country may boycott next year's Paris Olympics if athletes from Russia and Belarus are allowed to take part in the Games.

The International Olympic Committee said on Wednesday that no athlete should be prevented from competing because of nationality. The committee indicated that it will consider access to international sporting events for individual athletes from Russia and Belarus.

Following the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the IOC issued a recommendation last February that athletes and sports officials from Russia and its ally Belarus not be invited to or allowed at international competitions.

Ukrainian Youth and Sports Minister Vadym Huttsait said in a social media post on Thursday that no Russian or Belarusian athletes should be allowed at international competitions as long as the war in Ukraine continues.

He added, "If we are not heard, I do not rule out the possibility that we will boycott and refuse to participate in the Olympics."
