Japan, China hold high-level economic dialogue for first time in about 6 years NHK

A high-level economic dialogue between Japan and China, aimed at discussing economic cooperation between them, has been held for the first time in about six years.

It was attended by Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as well as senior officials of both countries who are in charge of economic and other issues.

Iwaya opened the meeting by touching upon the bilateral summit held in November last year. He called the dialogue an important step to put the direction agreed by the two leaders into practice. He said he wanted to deepen the discussion to bring about concrete cooperation.

The dialogue, which had been scheduled for two hours, lasted three hours.

While details have yet to be disclosed, Iwaya told reporters afterward that the two sides had frank discussions not only regarding economic cooperation but also about various pending issues.

He said it was meaningful to confirm with Wang the progress China has made in relevant processes for resuming imports of Japanese seafood.
