EU decides to keep funding UN agency for Palestinians NHK

European Union officials say they will continue to provide funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

The bloc had not clarified its stance for March and beyond in light of allegations some UNRWA staff members were involved in Hamas' attack on Israel last October.

The officials said on Friday the decision was made after the UN agency agreed to strengthen governance and improve internal investigations.

They say the EU will provide 50 million euros, or about 54 million dollars, next week. The bloc has earmarked more than 88 million dollars for the UNRWA this year.

The officials also announced funding of about 73 million dollars to support Palestinians through other international aid organizations, such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

EU Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi said on social media that the move is aimed at diversifying assistance.

Health authorities in Gaza said Thursday that Israel killed more than 100 civilians who were waiting to receive food and water from aid trucks.

European Council President Charles Michel said on social media that the reports left him "shocked and repulsed."

He also called for an immediate independent investigation.
