Sources: Countries urged Ukraine to end fighting in December peace plan talks NHK

Senior officials from emerging and developing nations, collectively known as the Global South, reportedly called on Ukraine to agree to end its fight against the Russian invasion during informal talks last month.

Diplomatic sources say the officials cited the need to prevent further casualties.

Senior officials from Group of Seven and Global South nations as well as other countries met on December 16 in Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh to discuss the 10-point peace plan that Ukraine had proposed.

The aim of the meeting was to modify what Ukraine calls "the peace formula" to make it more realistic.

The sources say Ukraine responded by saying it heard the opinion but will not change its position.

Delegations from about 80 countries and international organizations are scheduled to hold a fourth round of peace plan talks in Davos, Switzerland, on Sunday.

Observers say what transpired in December's informal meeting made it appear even more uncertain whether participants will be able to agree on the peace proposal.
