Saudi Arabia's state-run news agency has reported that King Salman bin Abdulaziz will be treated for lung inflammation.

The news agency revealed on Sunday that the 88-year-old monarch underwent medical examinations after complaining of high fever and joint pain. It also said the medical team decided to treat the king with antibiotics. Details about his condition have not been disclosed.

Following the development, his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, abruptly postponed a visit to Japan, which had been scheduled to start on Monday.

In 2022, the king appointed the crown prince as prime minister. He has since been consolidating power around the crown prince, allowing him to lead economic policies aimed at reducing the country's dependence on oil.

As the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, a title reflecting the presence of two Islamic holy sites within the country, and as the leader of a major oil producer, the king's health is drawing significant attention.
