The president of the United Nations General Assembly has called on Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine to maintain international order. Dennis Francis of the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago spoke to NHK in Tokyo on Thursday, ahead of the second anniversary of the Russian invasion. He said the General Assembly has passed resolutions condemning the invasion by Russia, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Francis said the resolutions "have been overwhelmingly in support of the view that Russia is in violation of its obligations under the charter" of the UN. He noted that the resolutions call for Moscow to stop its military action immediately, and expressed hope that Russian leaders will "see the wisdom in honoring their obligations." Francis also talked about the situation in the Gaza Strip, where fighting continues between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas. He noted that people in Gaza have very little water and food, saying that "it is not acceptable to allow human beings to experience such pain and suffering." He stressed that concerted efforts by the international community are necessary to find means to create a ceasefire, in order to bring humanitarian aid to people in Gaza. Francis also touched on climate change, which poses a particular threat to small island nations like his own country. He said that "there is a broad understanding of the perils of climate change," and it is "not a problem that can be solved by any country acting individually." Asked if countries can cooperate on the climate change issue even though international society is divided and polarized, Francis said he has no doubt that they can and that commitments undertaken need to be honored.
