Influenza is spreading in Japan with average weekly cases topping 50 per medical institution in the seven days ending November 23. That threshold was reached about a month earlier than last year.
The Japan Institute for Health Security says about 3,000 medical institutions nationwide reported total cases of about 197,000 in the same week. That's up 35 percent from the previous seven days.
Flu cases averaged more than 30 per institution in 39 of Japan's 47 prefectures, including Tokyo.
Three prefectures in northeastern Japan had the highest tallies. They are Miyagi with just over 89 per institution, Fukushima with around 87, and Iwate with roughly 83.
Japan health officials are urging residents to wash their hands, wear masks and consider getting vaccinated.
