Honda Motor says it will release EV models next year equipped with its original ASIMO operating system, developed for humanoid robots.
The Japanese automaker unveiled prototypes of the vehicles at the CES technology trade show in Las Vegas on Tuesday. They will first go on sale in the US.
Honda Motor Senior Managing Executive Officer Inoue Katsushi said, "The all new vehicle operating system will be at the core of the vehicle, and its name is ASIMO OS."
The OS is named after a humanoid robot the company developed.
Honda says the EVs will have level 3 automated driving functions, meaning the vehicle can handle most driving tasks itself.
The OS will have AI functionality to feed information to drivers, such as on nearby stores and locations of charging stations.
Senior Managing Executive Officer Inoue Katsushi says automation in the car industry is moving fast and Honda needs to catch up with rivals.
The company's new EVs will compete with US-maker Tesla and automakers in China to offer advanced software functions.
