NASA names 4 astronauts for Artemis 2 lunar orbit NHK

US space agency NASA has named the four astronauts who will orbit the moon next year as part of the American-led Artemis project.

The astronauts -- three from NASA and one from the Canadian Space Agency -- were introduced at an event in Houston, Texas, on Monday.

The crew is due to take off for an approximately 10-day test flight, dubbed Artemis 2, in November 2024. It will be the first crewed mission to orbit the moon in more than 50 years.

The Artemis 1 mission ended in December after its unmanned spacecraft successfully orbited the moon.

The international project, in which Japan is participating, aims to send astronauts to the moon in 2025 to conduct long-term exploration.

NASA astronaut Victor Glover will serve as the pilot for the Artemis 2 mission.

Speaking from Houston, Glover said, "Artemis 2 is more than a mission to the moon and back. It's more than a mission that has to happen before we send people to the surface of the moon. It is the next step on the journey that gets humanity to Mars."
