Thailand is considering lifting a ban on alcohol sales in the afternoon, to give its tourism industry a boost. The country's shops and restaurants are not allowed to sell alcohol between 2 pm and 5 pm. The restriction was put in place over 50 years ago, and was originally aimed at preventing government officials from imbibing during their working hours. Tourism is a major driver of Thailand's economy. Many visitors would enjoy a cold beer during the day, leading to calls from the tourism industry to ease the ban. Some venues have even reported troubles with foreign tourists unaware of the restriction, who demanded to be served. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra ordered relevant ministries and agencies to study the ban last week. She hopes to reach a decision within March.
