Two Danish artisans have helped refit the wood blades of an old windmill that is the symbol of a theme park near Tokyo. Funabashi H.C. Andersen Park in Chiba Prefecture features structures and squares inspired by fairy tales. Funabashi is a sister city of Odense in Denmark, the hometown of fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. The windmill is almost 30 years old, and five years ago its blades stopped spinning. As many visitors said they wanted to see the windmill spinning, the city allocated over 130 million yen, or about 900,000 dollars, to repair it and invited the artisans from Denmark. On Friday, workers used a crane to reinstall the repaired 11-meter-long blades on the windmill's roof. A man who visited the park with his son said he was glad to see the rare construction feat, and he looks forward to seeing the windmill moving again. One of the Danish artisans said he was relieved there were no problems attaching the blades. He said he hopes people come to see the windmill, which he called a symbol of Japan and Denmark's friendship. Repairs on the windmill are due to continue until March next year.
