An eyewitness of the Myanmar military's airstrike on a village that reportedly killed at least 100 civilians, including children, says the attack is a war crime.

Myanmar's military has acknowledged through state media that it carried out the airstrike in the northwestern region of Sagaing on Tuesday.

It said it targeted a ceremony to mark the opening of an office for the pro-democracy National Unity Government.

Local media have reported that at least 100 civilians, including women and children, were killed.

A resident said a military jet dropped bombs as people had gathered to celebrate Myanmar's New Year and food was being handed out.

He said the neighborhood is controlled by the People's Defense Force but none of its members were there. The PDF is an armed wing of the pro-democracy group.

He condemned the airstrike as a war crime and called on the international community to help stop the military's attacks.

The attack is believed to be the deadliest airstrike by the Myanmar military since it seized control in a coup two years ago.
