People in Ukraine renewed their resolve to keep resisting Russia's invasion on Independence Day on Sunday. The country declared its independence from the former Soviet Union on this day in 1991. Sunday also marked three-and-a-half years since Russia began its invasion. Many people dressed in traditional costumes visited a square in central Kyiv and left flowers to honor fallen soldiers. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video message released on Sunday that Ukraine "will never again be forced in history to endure the shame that Russians call a 'compromise.'" He added, "We need a just peace." The president stressed: "Our future will be decided by us alone. And the world knows it." Referring to security guarantees, Zelenskyy said Ukraine will achieve a "sustainable, reliable, long-lasting peace." He also said the guarantees will be "so strong that the thought of attacking Ukraine would never cross anyone's mind." ---------------- Quiz 1: On what day did Ukraine declare its independence from the former Soviet Union?
