People in Ukraine renewed their resolve to keep resisting Russia&#039;s invasion on Independence Day on Sunday. The country declared its independence from the former Soviet Union on this day in 1991.
        
                    
                  
Sunday also marked three-and-a-half years since Russia began its invasion. Many people dressed in traditional costumes visited a square in central Kyiv and left flowers to honor fallen soldiers.
        
                    
                  
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video message released on Sunday that Ukraine &quot;will never again be forced in history to endure the shame that Russians call a &#039;compromise.&#039;&quot; He added, &quot;We need a just peace.&quot;

Referring to security guarantees, Zelenskyy said Ukraine will achieve a &quot;sustainable, reliable, long-lasting peace.&quot; He also said the guarantees will be &quot;so strong that the thought of attacking Ukraine would never cross anyone&#039;s mind.&quot;
