British PM Liz Truss announces resignation NHK

British Prime Minister Liz Truss is calling it quits after about six weeks in the job. She announced Thursday she's stepping down as Conservative Party leader and also prime minister.

In her resignation statement, Truss claimed success in tackling energy bills and in setting out a vision for a low-tax, high-growth economy that would take advantage of what she called the freedoms of Brexit. But she went on to say she could not deliver the mandate on which she was elected by the Conservative Party.

Truss said the election for the next party leader will be completed within the next week.

She took office in early September following the resignation of Boris Johnson.

She has attempted to steer the economy toward growth through major tax cuts amid record levels of inflation. But concerns that those moves could aggravate the country's finances led to market turmoil.

Last Friday, she was forced to replace her Chancellor of the Exchequer with Jeremy Hunt, who reversed almost every part of her tax-cut plan.

And on Wednesday, Truss's Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, resigned for breaching security protocols by sending a government document using her personal email.
