Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has announced an expansion of military operations in Gaza. Some observers fear the expansion will likely increase the number of victims and negatively impact ceasefire talks.



Negotiations have continued since the first phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas ended a month ago. But the sides remain far apart on extending the agreement.



In announcing a major expansion of the military operation in Gaza on Wednesday, Katz said large areas of the enclave would be seized and added to Israel's security zones.



He called on residents of Gaza to eliminate Hamas and return all the hostages. He said this is the only way to end the war.



Qatar-based TV network Al Jazeera quoted medical sources on Wednesday as saying that more than 20 people had died in Israeli bombings throughout central and southern Gaza.



Health authorities in Gaza said the death toll since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18 has topped 1,000.
