Tokyo will host 2025 World Athletics Championships in September to avoid heat NHK

The World Athletics Council has decided that the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo will be held in September to avoid Japan's intense summer heat.

The council announced on Thursday that the event will be held from September 13 to 21 after approval at a meeting in Rome, Italy.

It will be the second-latest time of the year for the championships after the 2019 event in Doha, Qatar, which ran from late September to early October.
The Japan Association of Athletics Federations says the world championships are usually held in July or August, but the date was shifted for Tokyo given Japan's extremely hot summers.

The 2025 world championships will be held at Tokyo's National Stadium. About 2,000 athletes from 210 countries and regions are set to take part.

At last year's Tokyo Olympics in late July to early August, the marathon and race walking events were moved to Sapporo in the northern prefecture of Hokkaido to avoid the heat.
Summary
2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo rescheduled for September to mitigate summer heat. Event will take place from September 13-21, the second latest of the year following Doha's 2019 event. Shift from typical July/August dates due to Japan's extreme summers. Approximately 2,000 athletes
