Japan, Saudi Arabia agree to cooperate to calm Gaza situation NHK

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have agreed to work to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and de-escalate the conflict there.

Kishida held talks with the crown prince over the phone on Wednesday.

Kishida expressed great concern over the fighting between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and said Japan condemns the recent terror attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian militants.

He also voiced strong indignation over the deaths of innocent civilians caused by the blast at a hospital in Gaza on Tuesday.

He said Japan will provide emergency humanitarian aid worth 10 million dollars in total for civilians in Gaza. He sought Saudi Arabia's cooperation to improve the humanitarian situation in the region.

In response, the crown prince said he shares serious concern about the situation. The two agreed to work to calm the situation and strengthen humanitarian assistance.

Kishida also spoke to Jordan's King Abdullah, Qatari Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates over the phone to seek similar cooperation.

In his talks with King Abdullah, Kishida thanked Jordan for having accepted Self-Defense Forces aircraft from Japan to evacuate Japanese nationals from Israel.

The king said he would continue to cooperate on the departure of Japanese nationals from Israel.
