NHK has learned that four factions and one group in Japan's main governing Liberal Democratic Party failed to report a total of at least about 40,000 dollars in revenues last year. NHK analyzed the political funds reports of about 3,000 political organizations for 2022 with the help of artificial intelligence. The internal affairs ministry published the reports on Friday. The analysis found they did not report the amounts that other organizations listed as their expenditures to buy fundraising party tickets and participation fees. A law requires political organizations to record in their funds reports the names of individuals or organizations that pay over 200,000 yen, or about 1,340 dollars, at a fundraising party, along with the amounts paid. The factions and group told NHK that they have already corrected their reports or will look into the matter and handle it appropriately. The finding comes after a university professor filed a criminal complaint against five LDP factions, alleging that they failed to report about 267,000 dollars in political funds during the four years through 2021. Opposition parties are stepping up their criticisms of the LDP over the matter. The five factions say they have revised their reports by instruction from Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.
