Parts of Brazil remain in chaos as protesting supporters of outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro continue to refuse to accept his defeat in Sunday's presidential runoff. On Wednesday, thousands of his supporters rallied in front of a military facility in the largest city, Sao Paulo. They called on the military to intervene to prevent president-elect Luiz Inasio Lula da Silva from taking office. Brazil was under military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985, and Bolsonaro, a former army captain, has cultivated strong ties with the military since he assumed power after the 2018 election. However, the military has remained silent since the first round of the election in early October, a sign that it is distancing itself from Bolsonaro. One of the protesters said he cannot trust the electoral system in Brazil, and that the elections were fraudulent. He said he hopes the army will intervene in support of the protesters. Pro-Bolsonaro truck drivers have for days maintained roadblocks at around 150 locations on national highways, clashing with police when they tried to remove them.
