Russia's Defence Ministry says its Pacific Fleet will conduct an exercise in the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk from June 18 to 28.
The ministry says about 40 ships and 20 aircraft are taking part.
It says the exercise includes actions against enemy ships and submarines, as well as training to intercept aerial and maritime drones.
The ministry released what it says is footage of military vessels and submarines departing Vladivostok, where the Pacific Fleet is headquartered.
The ministry says the exercise had already been planned, but it comes when Russian President Vladimir Putin starts his two-day visit to North Korea, his first trip to the country in 24 years.
Kremlin watchers say this may be part of Russia's efforts to put pressure on countries that are against its invasion of Ukraine, including Japan and the United States.
